MIDDAY MOVIE MASTERCLASS: SINCE STAR WARS – THE CHANGING FACE OF THE MODERN SCIENCE FICTION / FANTASY FILM + SCREENING
An illustrated talk + Q&A followed by a screening of Blade Runner: The Final Cut at 2pm
The advent of George Lucas’s space opera epic, Star Wars in 1977, not only altered the public’s perception of the intergalactic feature but also changed the nature of the blockbuster movie. Overshadowing the decade’s earlier anti-hero movies with one quick light sabre swipe, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away became the place to be both commercially and cinematically. However, since then, arguably more hard-hitting and interesting science fiction pieces have emerged, taking the shine off the perennial family friendly favourite. Films like Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1981) and The Thing (1982) and more recently, The Matrix (1999) and District 9 (2009) have proved that the silver screen world of space and the future can be an intelligent, adult field of work, full of social commentary containing starry-eyed glimpses into the best and worst of human behaviour.
This masterclass is followed by a free screening of Blade Runner (15).
