£45 full / £30 members / £35 concessions / £25 under 25s

In this 5-week film course, we will look at recent European films that depict the intense and complex experience of childhood and adolescence in contemporary society. Through close analysis and discussion of the films and their context we will consider why and how contemporary directors have chosen to focus on this subject. We will examine the portrayal of children and adolescents both as witnesses to the inadequacies and injustices of the adult world, and also as active agents who participate in the construction of society. The course will explore the ways in which films such as 20,000 Species of Bees (Solaguren, 2023), Playground (Wandel, 2021), The Innocents (Vogt, 2021), Close (Dhont, 2022), A Chiara (Carpignano, 2021) and The Teachers’ Lounge (2023) employ a variety of approaches – including supernatural horror, documentary-style realism and social satire – to convey a sense of what it means to be a young person today.
