How Modern Cinema Has Reclaimed the Shocking Truths Found in Fairy Tales - An illustrated talk + Q&A, followed by a screening of Pan’s Labyrinth at 2pm

Once upon a time fairy tales were full of sex and violence and aimed at adults until the Disney Company reframed the fairy tale into the wholesome cinematic versions that came to dominate our childhood memories. Recent cinema has begun to reclaim the more shocking truths found in the original tales, dealing with more taboo issues such as sexuality, abuse of power, and violence, while retaining the sense of beauty, wonder and magic we associate with fairy tales. With plenty of clips, and using examples such as Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent, Red Riding Hood and Hard Candy, Pan’s Labyrinth and Tale of Tales, we’ll examine how and why fairy tales in film have returned to their roots.

Content warning: In this talk Sam Maxfield will be covering several sensitive topics and using words and phrases that may be triggering for some participants.
