An intricate and delicate coming-of-age drama, The Quiet Girl is the Irish language debut feature from director Colm Bairéad. Based on the short story by Claire Keegan, the film explores themes of family and neglect through the eyes of its young protagonist.
Nine-year-old Cáit often disappears into the background of her overcrowded, dysfunctional family. When her mother’s cousin Eibhlín and her husband Seán offer to take care of her for the summer to alleviate the family’s financial difficulties, her father can’t seem to get her into the car quick enough.
Cáit blossoms over the course of her stay, under the attention and care of her distant relatives. Much is left unsaid but slowly Cáit learns the weight that Eibhlín and Seán carry with them.
Dr Deirdre O'Byrne, Lecturer in English at Loughborough University, will introduce The Quiet Girl at 5.45pm on Monday 16 May.
