BFI Film Academy Short Course across the East Midlands
The BFI Film Academy Short Course is your chance to dive into the world of filmmaking. Whether you're in Nottingham, Derby, Lincoln, or Corby, this free course is open to 16-19 year-olds who are ready to get creative, learn new skills, and make something amazing.
Broadway is proud to lead the East Midlands programme, working with our brilliant partners: QUAD (Derby), Paradigm Arts (Lincoln), and The Core at Corby Cube (Corby).
What You'll Do
Over the course of a few weeks, you’ll:
- Learn how to use professional film kit
- Try out roles like directing, camera, sound, lighting, and editing
- Work in a team to make two short films with actors from The Television Workshop
- Pick up tips from people who work in film and TV
- Join extra online sessions to finish your edits
Who Can Apply?
To take part, you must:
- Be aged 16-19 on the first day of the course
- Live in the UK
- Not be at university
- Not have done a BFI Film Academy Short Course before
We’re looking for young people who are passionate about film and excited to collaborate and learn.
How Much Does It Cost?
The course is completely free. However, if the cost of travel is a barrier, we do have bursaries to help cover costs. We want everyone who’s passionate about film to have the chance to take part.

Each partner runs their own course with different deadlines:
- Nottingham - Broadway (applications open Fri 1 Aug)
- Corby Cube - Corby (applications open Fri 1 Aug)
- Derby - QUAD (applications open Fri 1 Aug)
- Lincoln - Paradigm Arts (applications open Fri 1 Aug)
