About the BFI Film Academy Short Course Programmes across the East Midlands

The BFI Film Academy offers accessible courses and resources for anyone interested in starting or improving their filmmaking skills. If you join a Film Academy Short Course, you'll get hands-on experience working with industry professionals, helping you build practical knowledge and skills.

These courses aim to train and inspire the next generation of UK filmmakers and production crew, focusing on 16-to-19-year-olds. Participants develop new skills, gain industry knowledge, and prepare for careers in the screen industries.

Each year, 20 successful applicants join the BFI Film Academy’s Short Course programmes respectively across the East Midlands delivery partners. The course offers a supportive learning environment with both practical and theory-based masterclasses led by experienced professionals from the Film and TV industries.

Participants learn about the various roles in filmmaking, hear personal stories from professionals, and gain insights on how to enter the industry. As part of the course, participants work in teams to create a film, applying their newly acquired skills in real production roles.

Additionally, participants aim to complete a Level 2 qualification as part of their extracurricular learning.

The Short Course is free for those selected, and bursaries are available once you start from the respective delivery partner.

After completing the course, participants join the BFI Film Academy alumni network, gaining access to exclusive events and opportunities, including:

  • Career talks, mentoring, training masterclasses, and bootcamps
  • Paid traineeships in Film and high-end TV production
  • Residential programs with BFI Film Academy Specialist Courses across the UK
