About the Lady Ludd project
‘Lady Ludd' explores how the tools of traditional crafts can be reappropriated to create new ‘tools’ for ‘performance’.
Sophie Huckfield is collaborating with music technologist Assistant Professor Juan Martinez Avila at the University of Nottingham's Mixed Reality Lab. They are repurposing an antique loom into a musical instrument, combining it with new technology to explore alternative forms of creative ‘production’.
The loom will be a performance tool, to be played by Lady Ludd in their many forms.
The project is inspired by local history, folklore and workers movements, focusing on the impact of technology and automation on the history and future of labour in Nottingham and the Midlands.
About the Artist
Birmingham/London-based Sophie Huckfield (she/they) is an artist. Her practice draws on contemporary research and histories related to technology, labour, craft, social-class and industrialisation. She incorporates layering and cutting as a conceptual tool to reframe these complex socio-political histories, to develop multidisciplinary works which reimagine and reconfigure ‘production’ contexts and challenge the dominant narratives employed to frame specific stories, histories and experiences.
Her practice aims to re-purpose the tools and technologies of production, both materially and culturally, to make space for redefining how we produce values, relations and traditions which are in turn embedded into the objects and stories we make.

Sonic Sculptures is a project led by visual artist/curator Ryan Boultbee, architectural design studio FROMTHEGROUNDUP (FTGU) and musician Tom Harris.
Sonic Sculptures is a recurring series of events turning Broadway Gallery into an instrument, hosting a programme of soundscapes and sonic experiences.
Sonic Sculptures explores the intersections of material, space, and sound through an innovative Framework for Practice installation, captivating performances, and workshops.
