Based on the novel by Raymond Chandler, Robert Altman’s adaptation features a Phillip Marlow who has more in common with Jeff Bridges’ The Dude than Humphrey Bogart’s take on the noir hero. A late-night visit from a Mexico-bound friend leads Marlow into trouble with both the cops and the mob; and, unlike Bogart’s always-in-control detective, Elliott Gould’s dishevelled PI seems to stumble his way to what turns out to be an uncomfortable truth.

Screening as part of Out of Their Depth: Corruption, Scandal and Lies in the New Hollywood, presented by Cinema Rediscovered and Park Circus.
