Continuing his run of acclaimed and original biopics (after Jackie and Spencer), director Pablo Larraín turns his attention to legendary opera singer Maria Callas in this empathetic reimagining of her final days in 1970s Paris. Angelina Jolie gives a transformative performance, capturing the myriad layers and masks of the singer's personality, from pithy to heartbreakingly vulnerable, while showing flashes of the personality that saw her idolised as an opera star. – BFI London Film Festival
