Hard Truths

Mike Leigh’s first film in six years sees the prolific British director return to a contemporary setting for the first time in over a decade with a characteristically uncompromising yet heartfelt portrait of contemporary family life in London. Sisters Pansy and Chantelle are chalk and cheese, but their close bond is the foundation that their extended family is built upon. Lately, life has proven too much for Pansy and things come to a head over the course of a Mother’s Day weekend in a film that ranks amongst the director’s finest. – BFI London Film Festival
