Teen films have long captured the highs and lows of adolescence, offering a window into youth culture, identity, and societal expectations. This one-day course explores the evolution of the teen film through four iconic movies — Rebel Without a Cause (1955), The Breakfast Club (1985), Clueless (1995), and Mean Girls (2004). From the angst and rebellion of James Dean to the sharp satire of high school hierarchy in Mean Girls, we’ll examine how these films reflect and shape teenage experiences across generations. Through engaging discussion and analysis, we’ll explore how teen films navigate themes of gender, class, and identity. The course also will cover how teen films reinvent classic narratives—whether it’s Clueless reimagining Jane Austen or 10 Things I Hate About You bringing Shakespeare to high school. We’ll also consider the enduring appeal of these films—why they stay with us and continue to resonate long after our teenage years. Perfect for film lovers and pop culture enthusiasts alike, this course offers different perspectives on the teen genre’s lasting impact.
