This special double bill, presented by film club Ebony Reels, brings together two powerful films that speak to Black survival across time, moving between Afrofuturism and historical supernatural cinema.

Set in 2049, Brown Girl Begins unfolds on a forsaken island off the coast of Toronto, where the survival of an isolated community depends on spiritual knowledge and courage. Young Ti-Jeanne must risk death by confronting a spirit in order to step into her role as a Caribbean priestess and secure the future of her people.

Written and directed by Sharon Lewis, the film draws on folklore and Afrofuturism to create a powerful, atmospheric story.

Sinners is set in the 1930s Jim Crow-era American South. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers desperate to leave their troubled lives behind. When they return to their hometown, they discover a far greater and more unsettling evil awaiting them.

Coogler sustains tension and dread throughout, while Jordan delivers a compelling performance in both roles. With 16 Oscar nominations, Sinners is now the most Oscar-nominated film in history.

Together, the films explore Afrofuturism and Black survival across time, affirming belief, resistance, and community as enduring sources of power.
