Our screening on Fri 15 May is presented by Kino Klubb and introduced by Kino Klubb's Joey Bell

John Grant, a bored school teacher working in the remote outback, stops overnight in the frontier mining town of Bundanyabba (the Yabba), Grant is swept up in a vortex of hard-drinking, hard-living and crude men and descends into a sun-blasted nightmare of masculinity, booze, and brutality. Everything about the film feels tactile—the heat, the dust, the stale air thick with sweat and beer. It doesn’t just depict degradation; it traps you inside it.

“A deeply – and I mean deeply – unsettling and disturbing movie. I saw it when it premiered at Cannes in 1971 and it left me speechless” – Martin Scorsese
