While often noted only for its more mainstream, feelgood, or kitchen sink presentations, the British film vaults are crammed with unexpected delights and strange celluloid wonders. This course will explore a myriad of eccentric, dark and often surreal offerings which paint a more fragmented and complex portrait of this rainy island, its inherent culture and modern and not-so modern attitudes. Expect plenty of clips and discussion as we examine hidden curios such as The Queen of Spades (1949), Slade in Flame (1975), Bronco Bullfrog (1969), Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly (1970), Le Petomane (1979), Small Time (1996) and many, many more. “I almost wish I hadn't gone down that rabbit-hole—and yet—and yet—it's rather curious…”
