Born of a collaboration between a European Union funded Erasmus+ project on Cinema and Hospitality and Broadway Cinema, this one-day course will explore the response of contemporary European fiction and documentary films to migration. In a world where migrants and refugees are either condemned to invisibility or forced into visibility on others’ terms (as objects for rejection or compassion), cinema has the power to ask us to see differently, to put ourselves in others’ shoes and to open a space for normally silenced voices. But it is also limited by its genres and forms and inequalities of access to filmmaking, distribution and exhibition. These are some of the issues that will be explored during the day using a fascinating range of important films such as ONCE, FIRE AT SEA, HUMAN FLOW and GOD'S OWN COUNTRY. The day will end with a free screening of THE MOVEMENT followed by a discussion of the issues raised in the film. Lunch will be provided. The course will be led by Martin O’Shaughnessy, Professor of Film Studies at Nottingham Trent, and Professor Ana Manzanas Calvo of the University of Salamanca but will also involve other invited participants.

This course is a multiplier event for an EU funded project to develop a syllabus on Hospitality in Film.

Terms and conditions
This is a one-day course taking place on Saturday 27 April from 10.30AM. When you arrive please report to the Box Office, where you will be given instructions on how to find the room by one of our members of staff. You will also be given a full refund of your £10 deposit upon arrival.
You are not required to bring anything with you to the first session except a pen and paper if you wish to take notes.
During the course, there will be two comfort breaks when complimentary tea and coffee will be served; and a lunch break where food will be provided. If you have any specific dietary requirements, please email us at programme@broadway.org.uk by 12noon on Friday 19 April.
