One of the year’s (century’s?) most deliciously bonkers films, Being John Malkovich is the feature film debut of both director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman, who both earned themselves nominations at the 72nd Academy Awards. The film imagines a world in which Craig, a schlubby failing puppeteer, discovers in his office a secret portal into the mind of actor John Malkovich. After 15 minutes, Craig is ejected, spat out onto the side of the New Jersey turnpike. With its truly surreal concept, Being John Malkovich is a perfect example of the kinds of risks both Hollywood execs and stars were willing to take during the decade.

Screening as part of 1999 - a season of our favourite films celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.
