Artist residency and exhibition by Margit Rusert (DE) and Chris Wright (UK)

Residency: 24th June to 3rd July, 12–4pm (except Sunday). Visitors are welcome during these opening hours.

Exhibition: 4th and 5th July 2025, 12–5pm

Broadway Gallery, 17 Heathcoat Street, NG1 3AL. Or access via Broadway's main entrance.

In this audio-sculptural installation, Rusert and Wright's vision is to create a space where nothing is certain—where elements such as plants, fungi, or even bacteria reach from the top to the bottom, from the corners and centre, and out to the edges. Resonances—some familiar, some not—encompass the gallery. In, around, or through the exhibited work, individual sounds play quietly among the sculptures, creating micro-worlds. The temporality and fragility of the listening process are heightened by the contrasting solidity of the sculptures, which appear to threaten the space.

Taking inspiration from Rusert’s earlier sculptures The Winner Takes It All—an exploration of plant mutation—and in response to environmental deterioration, Offshoot imagines what might happen next. This work at Broadway Gallery, explores the natural world—particularly plant life—in an attempt to understand how one might see and hear the Earth in a future time.

Offshoot aims to stimulate discussion around sustainability, biodiversity, and ecology, emerging through the materials and processes involved in the creation of the work. It also explores how sculpture and sound can reinforce one another in addressing ecological issues. All viewpoints are welcomed, and the artists extend an invitation to take part—either through making or through conversation—in English or German.

Throughout the development of this work, every effort has been made to use repurposed and recycled materials, and to conduct the residency in accordance with the artists' principles.
