Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a television series that has inspired a huge amount of discussion, analysis and academic study. More than twenty years after it ended, fans are still debating its characters, relationships, themes and ideas, while the field of ‘Buffy Studies’ has taken the series seriously as a subject for academic discussion.
This eight-week course will create a space for that kind of discussion. Each week, we’ll focus on one season of Buffy, with two selected episodes for participants to watch beforehand. Rather than being a traditional lecture course, the sessions will work more like a book club, with the episodes providing a starting point for conversation.
Each session will begin with some background and ideas to consider, using clips and questions to guide the discussion. We’ll look at the philosophy and themes behind the show, its characters and relationships, its use of horror, fantasy and comedy, as well as aspects of its production including music, costume and visual style.
Across eight weeks, we’ll follow Buffy from its beginnings as an unusual mid-90s genre show through to its final season, looking at how the series, its characters and its ideas changed along the way.
