The glamour of Hollywood has always been inseparable from star performances and star images. This course is designed to analyse the historical, aesthetic, and cultural significance of film stars. Revealing the truth behind the glamour, we will examine issues of gender; the effects of the studio system; the value of stars to the audience; Hollywood’s self-reflection in films such as ‘A Star is Born’; and ultimately whether or not the traditional film star can compete in a culture of disposable celebrity and social media exposure.
