Look out gov’, ‘e’s got a shooter! Welcome to the world of the British villain. While Hollywood may have spawned the likes of Cagney, Bogart and Tarantino, the home-grown gangster lives in a very different world of blags, sawn-off shotguns and foul-mouthed recriminations. From Brighton Rock (1948) to Get Carter (1971), through to The Krays and (1990) and Snatch (2000), this course will chart the rise, and more importantly fall, of the UK bad ‘un, navigating topics like class, gender and social change. While examining classics of the genre, we’ll also delve into less celebrated offerings such as Turn the Key Softly (1953), The Hill (1965) and many, many more.
