In 2025, Ireland commemorated the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O’Connell – a visionary statesman, reformer, and champion of human rights. This one-hour documentary traces O’Connell’s journey from Kerry lawyer to global advocate for justice. Known as The Liberator, he secured Catholic Emancipation, pioneered non-violent mass political mobilisation, and inspired democratic movements around the world. The documentary, written and directed by multi-award-winning filmmaker Ruán Magan and narrated by Domhnall Gleeson, features insights from leading historians and scholars, newly uncovered archival material and an original score by Colm Mac Con Iomaire.

The screening will be followed by a discussion between two authorities on O’Connell and his times; Pat Murphy (author and chair of Nottingham Irish Studies Group) and Daniel Mulhall (Former Irish Ambassador to the United Kingdom and the United States).

Live Irish music will be playing in the Café Bar from 6.30pm.

Presented in partnership with the Nottingham St. Patrick's Festival 2026.
