Following TALE OF TALES in 2015, this is the second collaboration between legendary producer Jeremy Thomas and Italian director Matteo Garrone (GOMORRAH). Marcello is an expert dog groomer, in a grotty seaside village near Rome, who ekes out his meagre existence by running errands for local thieves. Divorced, the light in his life is his daughter, who he takes on diving trips. But the fragile, bumping along ecosystem Marcello inhabits is torn to shreds when he falls under the ambit of Simone, a bullying, violent criminal. With an understated, tragicomic atmosphere and a fantastic eye for the minutiae of lives on the margins, Matteo Garrone's masterful film builds inexorably to a powerful climax. DOGMAN is also embellished and anchored by a terrific central performance from Marcello Fonte, who deservedly won the Best Actor Prize at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. - Adrian Wootton, London Film Festival 2018
