In this 1930s-set political thriller and tribute to the free press, the Oscar®-nominated Polish director pays tribute to Welsh journalist Gareth Jones, who broke the news about the famine/genocide in what is now Ukraine. Shaking his minders, Jones travels clandestinely to the region where he finds millions left to starve after all grain is confiscated to finance the expansion of the Soviet empire. As the Kremlin continuously issues denials, Jones fights to make the truth known. - Chicago Film Festival
