From the beginning of cinema to the streaming era, the witch, with her broomstick in hand, has never lost her appeal for filmmakers and audiences.

This one-day course will examine the history of witches on film from the 1920s to the present day, exploring how and why representations of witchcraft have transformed across 100 years on screen. From the silent cinema of the 1920s, to the radical college girls and seductive sirens of the 1960s, through to modern reclamations and re-imaginations, in this course we'll explore what we can learn from one of cinema’s most enduring obsessions, and how one character can be both “the ultimate tragic victim” and “the ultimate embodiment of evil” (Hutton, 2017).
