Quentin Tarantino is one of the most influential and celebrated filmmakers of the last thirty years; a filmmaker known for sharp, engaging dialogue, graphic violence, genre mixing, and postmodern flair. In this one-day course, we will explore Tarantino’s films through the lens of critical theory – mainly postmodern, genre, feminist and auteur theory. Key questions will be asked, such as: What makes Tarantino’s films distinctly his own? How does he subvert and/or use traditional genres like Westerns, crime thrillers, and martial arts films? Is Tarantino's portrayal of women empowering or exploitative? And how is his narrative style informed by postmodernism? Key films such as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Django Unchained, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will serve as focal points for discussion and analysis.
This course is perfect for film enthusiasts, students of cinema, and anyone interested in unpacking the layers of one of modern cinema’s most famous directors.
