EM Forster is perhaps best known by film audiences for his contribution to the Merchant Ivory cinema canon (Howard's End, A Room With a View, Maurice), as well as David Lean's epic version of A Passage to India. Films which undoubtedly brought the English author's work to a new audience. But within these now familiar stories lies another even more fascinating story - that of Edward Morgan Forster himself. In this ten-week course, we'll be looking not only at the famous adaptations of his novels and stories but his relationships with other members of the Bloomsbury Group, his place in the history of LGBTQ+ fiction, and the influence he continues to wield on our idea of what it is to be English.
