When their mother falls ill, Satsuki and Mei move to a new home in the country. They discover it is full of house spirits, while outside are wood spirits and other creatures. Soon after, the girls are whisked away on a magical adventure aboard a ‘cat bus’. Cited by Akira Kurosawa as one of his favourite Japanese films, Miyazaki’s wondrous fantasies introduced the world to the iconic and loveable Totoro, which became the logo of Studio Ghibli. – BFI
