The Brontë sisters – Charlotte, Emily and Anne – wrote seven novels between them. Their characters and stories have influenced our knowledge of the period in which they lived and, in television and cinema, both replicated and re-envisioned it.
But even more than the books and poems – it is the Brontës themselves with whom we have continued to be fascinated. The three extraordinary women and their artist brother Branwell – present us with a picture of both an unparalleled degree of genius within a single home and the restrictions placed on women of intelligence and talent.
Over three weeks, we’ll be looking at the Brontës, their most famous and frequently adapted works, and the lasting impact they have had on our imaginations.
