It is impossible to talk about British horror films without discussing production company Hammer. Though in existence since 1934, it is its collection of classic monster movies spanning from 1957 to the early 70s which still elicit many thrills and chills to a loyal fan base. Ushering in a new form of Technicolor gothic replete with lashings of Kensington Gore and sex appeal, Hammer dominated the scary movie landscape throughout the 50s and 60s unleashing movies like The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy and The Devil Rides Out. This course will chart the rise of Hammer with its crumbling castles, velvet capes and mad scientists, and how it drove a stake through the heart of the censors and took on the British film industry.
