A showcase of recent work by Nottingham artist Gabriela Rogula.

Multimedia artist and Near Now Studio member Gabriela Rogula ends a residency in Broadway Gallery with a sharing of recent artworks and works-in-progress.

In summer 2019, Gabriela began working with macro photography and videography. In 2021, she initiated an alternative Instagram project, Jaga Żuk, to share nature-focused work separate from her main practice. Over two years ago, the artist planned to film moth silhouettes by shining light onto thick tracing paper and recording their shadows from the opposite side. What initially appeared simple became challenging when they realised how few moths remained. Once common in the garden and on the kitchen window, their absence raised concerns about broader environmental loss and local ecological change.

Many videos in this project were filmed in the artist’s garden, formerly rich with insects, birds, and frogs, where a clear decline in all three was observed. As life visible to the naked eye continued to disappear, she began using a microscope to record what remains. This shift toward microscopic video extends the macro practice and connects with digital video, animation, and drawing inspired by microorganisms.
