This five-week course explores the diverse and evolving cinematic representations of cults, from historical dramatisations of infamous groups to contemporary allegories reflecting modern societal pressures. We’ll analyse how filmmakers utilise narrative structures, visual aesthetics, character archetypes, and thematic motifs to depict the allure, dangers, and psychological dynamics of cults.

Cults on Screen will examine how these films engage with genres like horror, drama, thriller, and satire to comment on themes of community, individuality, manipulation, and societal anxieties, revealing the multifaceted ways cinema interprets and shapes our understanding of intense belief systems.
