In 2024, The Substance celebrated body horror specifically through the lens of beauty marking a new wave of beauty horror texts. During this one-day film course, we'll discuss what defines beauty horror, explore cinematic examples of beauty horror from the 1990s to present day, and analyse the tension between the desire for beauty and the horrific consequences of achieving it that beauty horror films portray. Films that we'll be deep diving into include Death Becomes Her (1992), The Substance (2024), and The Ugly Stepsister (2025) and we'll be using these films to not only explore the genre but to analyse the real horrors lurking behind contemporary beauty trends.
