Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, The Seven Year Itch, Sunset Boulevard - the filmography of Billy Wilder is littered with stone cold classics, all distinctly the work of the Austrian-American director, yet astoundingly diverse in theme and tone. As celebrated for his writing and co-writing (he saw screenwriting as the primary element of all of his films), the tight plotting, endlessly quotable dialogue and sterling performances (he is responsible for close to 20 Oscar nominations for his casts) of his output set him apart in his heyday and continue to do so today.
Over four weeks, we'll follow him from his early work as a screenwriter in Berlin, his flight to American from the Nazi regime and his Hollywood career. Nobody's perfect, as Some Like It Hot tells us, but Billy Wilder came close.
