Twenty-something Cheryl is a black lesbian filmmaker working in a video store in 1990s Philadelphia. Looking for inspiration, she comes across Fae Richards, a beautiful and elusive black actress from the 1930s she soon becomes obsessed with. Meanwhile, she begins a relationship with Diana, but her fixations on Diana and Fae cause tension with her best friend Tamara. Thoughtful, personal and humorous, Dunye’s film is a sharp look at identity and community.
