Greenaway’s dark, allegorical tale is both sumptuous and brutal as we follow an adulterous relationship, the actions of an amoral crime boss who lacks any inhibitions, and a series of decadent meals. With Michael Nyman’s score, Jean Paul Gaultier’s costumes and Sacha Vierny’s cinematography providing cultural nourishment, some may find certain scenes hard to stomach, but there is much to feast on. –BFI
